The Amateur
I walked over to Murphy's body and went through his pockets.
I found the locker key and his car keys, his wallet, and a
half a roll of antacids. I put the bottle of Jim Beam into
my coat pocket.
He was heavy, but I managed to get him up into a fireman's carry,
and walked outside. The neighborhood was quiet. I had parked
my car down the block, behind where I had found his.
I put him in the passenger seat of his car. I went to my car,
and got the .22, and the Dragunov. I slid into the driver's
seat of his car, and drove over to Our Lady of Grace.
I propped him up in the driver's seat with the bottle next to
him. I wiped the .22 down, then pressed it into his hand and
fired a shot into the air. Then I put the .22 in the glove
compartment. In the glove compartment was the folded paper
with Mark Danner's name and address. I put that in my pocket.
Resting the Dragunov between his knees, I put the barrel into his mouth,
and his thumb on the trigger. I pulled my coat up as a shield, and
let the thumb fall. There was a click, and a mess on the back seat,
and a hole in the roof. I left the driver's door open, and walked
home.
About halfway home, I put my coat into a dumpster.
